Winter Driving can be challenging to say the least. It seems when the conditions are the worst the worst drivers are out in force. Be very aware of the other drivers on the road.
Tips For Driving In The Snow And Ice
The biggest tip there is for driving in the snow and ice is don’t drive at all. If you have to follow some of these tips to be safer on the road.
- Let the roads be cleared and salt put down before driving.
- Leave plenty of distance between you and other cars to safely stop.
- Brake gently, don’t jam on them.
- Drive with your lights on to increase your visibility to other drivers.
- Use a low gear for traction.
- Don’t use cruise control or overdrive.
- Don’t pass snow plows and salt trucks.
If Your Rear Wheels Skid
- Stear in the direction of the skid.
- If you have regular brakes pump them.
- If you have ant-lock brakes apply gentle preassure, DO NOT pump them
If Your Front Wheels Skid
1. Take your foot off the gas and shift into neutral. The skid will slow down the car and then the car will regain traction,, when this happens steer in the direction of the skid.
If You Get Stuck
- Don’t spin your wheels, this will only dig you in deeper.
- Turn the Steering wheel side to side, this will move the snow out of the way.
- Drive slowly to ease out.
- Use sand, gravel, salt or even kitty litter for traction.
- Rock the car back and forth by going from drive to reverse.
